What Makes XR DifferEnt
We declare global rebellion
All other efforts have failed. The climate and ecology emergency poses an existential threat to life on our planet, and the time for polite action and “reasonable” compromise is past. We rebel not just against a system that has failed us, but on behalf of the future we want. We invent a joyful new politics and culture—because it’s the only way.
We Demand More
Others are fighting for a 40% reduction in emissions by 2030—too little, too late. We demand net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions by 2025. And we can’t trust politicians to do it, so we demand Citizens’ Assemblies to make the tough policy decisions for them. Every change we make must prioritize the needs of the communities hurt most by the climate and ecology emergency.
We Do What Works
Decades of voting, lobbying, and marching for climate action have accomplished nothing. Working within the system doesn’t work. But there is another way: history shows that nonviolent direct action—civil disobedience—can make “the impossible” suddenly possible. Many of our members are willing to be arrested for disrupting business-as-usual. We all work to support those actions, and to support those who get arrested.
We Are Global & Local
A global emergency demands global action. Extinction Rebellion has chapters in over 60 countries, united by our demands and principles, but decentralized to avoid bureaucracy and politics. That means that anyone can take a few easy steps and jump right in. Join a group. Form new groups. Take part in a mass action, or design and stage your own with other rebels. Based on your personal interests, skills, and capacities, there are so many ways to get involved.
We’re Inventing A Better Future
As activists, we take a new approach: adaptive, resilient, and creative. That’s regeneration—and Extinction Rebellion demands a regenerative culture. By learning from organic systems to integrate science, the arts, activism, and all human effort in healthy, thriving, joyful ways, we can and will achieve the future we demand.
