Extinction Rebellion NYC has been petitioning the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) for a year and a half to TELL THE TRUTH about the climate crisis, update its climate exhibit, and DECLARE A CLIMATE EMERGENCY. Theodore Roosevelt, one the founders of AMNH, put it beautifully:
The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased and not impaired in value. These words, etched in stone on your building, carry a profound message.
Now, it’s evident—we’re in the midst of a climate and ecological breakdown. Science, society, and politics are intricately interconnected. The present socioeconomic system can’t shield life from the crises to come; it is designed to borrow from future generations to maintain current lifestyles. If the AMNH, a beloved 153-year-old institution dedicated to Earth’s history, biodiversity, cultures, and the universe, does not emphasize the urgency, the public is kept in the dark. AMNH’s continued inaction signals that the chances of our civilization, along with the survival of all species, are slim. Business as usual cannot continue.
The Atlantic meridian ocean current is slowing to a halt. [1] The state of our migratory species is disastrous. [2] California recently had two years of rain in a single day. [3] Since the 1980s, each decade has been hotter than the last. [4] In the past nine years, each year has been hotter than the last. [5] 2023 broke—no, shattered—climate records so much so that new parameters had to be drawn into graphs used for measuring it. [6] We have now reached the dreaded 1.5C difference from preindustrial times. [7] None of this is hyperbole. This is all science. We’re in a climate crisis that is largely causing the sixth mass extinction. [8] This reality forces us into our finest hour, our reckoning as the human race. This reality is not mentioned anywhere in the science museum. Instead, hidden in the basement is a tepid, albeit large, exhibit about climate change. Most of the data is over 10 years old and is expressed in language that understates the monumental crisis we are in.

Our action helped convince the museum to update their climate exhibit! Well done and thank you! Both the LONDON MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY and the BALTIMORE ART MUSEUM have DECLARED A CLIMATE EMERGENCY, but the AMNH still refuses to.
The board of directors’ chair, Scott Bok serves as CEO of Greenhill Financial that has conducted $220 Billion in fossil fuel transactions.
The board of directors’ vice president, Chris Davis owns $23 million in Berkshire Hathaway and is on its board of directors. BH is a major stake holder in fossil fuels.
The board of directors’ treasurer, Raymond McGuire sits on the board of Hess and is compensated $300,000/yr.
Is the museum’s board’s self-evident conflict of interest holding the museum back?

GOVERNANCE POLICY- SCIENTIFIC INDEPENDENCE
In order to safeguard the integrity of the Museum, while serving in a museum role Board Trustees are expected to avoid conflicts of interest to protect the Museum’s scientific independence.
AMNH is a leader in science and education in the U.S. It has a responsibility to TELL THE TRUTH about the reality of the CLIMATE EMERGENCY. We insist that the AMNH take responsibility to maintain its integrity.
The AMNH Board of Trustees must:
Publicly declare a climate and ecological emergency and commit everything in its power to truth-telling, care-taking, and change-making.
Educate the public every day. AMNH must curate a primary exhibit on the climate crisis that is kept up-to-date and accurate. AMNH must commit to ringing the climate alarm bell.
Repudiate all ties to fossil-fuel money. Reject further monetary contributions tied to the fossil fuel industry.
Our world is in peril, our climate crisis is accelerating. We need everyone to work towards climate justice and transition off fossil fuels. The museum is a powerful social, educational and political lever. If the museum will put its muscle behind climate science, then we have a chance of moving the needle on our ever-increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
